Club History

The club was created in 1972 under the name Auckland Freshwater Anglers Club

The initial ‘Aims’ of the club were recorded as:- Opposition to Trout farming for commercial profit, concern about forestry run-off into Waipa & other Waikato watersheds, and access to Hunua catchment.

From its inception, the club has been involved in environmental advocacy and public access. Promoting fly fishing as a recreational and competitive sport.

The club has supported members in local and international competitions, with several members over the years making the New Zealand fly fishing team, and competing in competitions in New Zealand and internationally.

The club changed its name in 2018 to become the Auckland Flyfishing Anglers club to reflect the growing interest in Saltwater fly fishing. Previously the club was heavily involved in promoting competition angling and although this is still a component of the sport, we are now more focused on the recreational, social, and environmental aspects

Our activities include monthly meetings with speakers from around the country. Fly Tying Classes, Fly Casting tuition and mentoring, river and wading safety, and monthly club fishing trips to different locations around New Zealand.
