Updating you again as we head to the wire- we have now reached 57 trout as of Friday evening, most of those new catches are from the last day and a half. A good percentage are from juniors now, 23 juniors have caught 21 fish between them! Many are catching a trout or even a fish for the first time, great to see! New names on the board this year are Cruz Godfrey, Tyla Baranyai, Oscar Kemp-Lloyd, Toby Moffitt, AJ Morley, and Finley O’Callaghan. Of course they face stiff competition from our experienced regulars…
See my amateur phone pic attached taken Friday with Asher Morley and son AJ Morley with their respective fish, (also Simeon) after weighing in at Sweetmans. William came and took some great shots that are up on Facebook, along with some stunning shots from the Sharpe family and Jeremy Johnson.
Check out the 2018 Facebook page- follow the link below-, there’s plenty of pics on there.
Reminder- If you took some action/scenic photos on the river during the comp and would like to share them, please email them to William at firstname.lastname@example.org
and he’ll put them up on Facebook for you.
We now have 3 Rainbow trout (all caught by adults) in that mix of 57, thanks to the “Trout Ticklers” team from Cambridge area. We have 7 teams of 4 entered this year, and the new format based on average condition factor has made it a tight race.
There have been no new trophy size fish entered in this last stage so far, as usual they get a bit shy….
Weather-There will be the occasional shower Saturday morning then clearing in the afternoon. Temperature of the river has dropped, river level back up to a good 7.7m at Huntly and stable at the moment. The rain has bought the fishing up a notch, or is it the anglers trying a bit harder?
The weigh in at Taupiri Tavern will be from mid day to 3 pm close off sharp, you can also weigh fish up to 2.30 pm at Cambridge Sportsworld and Hamilton Hunting & Fishing. The prize giving is set around 4.30 pm, but there is plenty to do between 3pm and then, and there is a free barbecue kindly supplied by tavern host Bob Gamble. We also will have a cooking demonstration featuring smoked trout from Mike Geelen at the prizegiving around 4 pm, so don’t miss it!
Raffles – see attached details of the 2 raffles we are running, the terrific $100 (3 draw) meat raffle kindly donated by Huntly Meat Co, ($2 ticket or 3 for $5) and the Shimano Baitrunner combo sponsored from Sweetmans ($5 ticket or 3 for $10)
The adults draw prize Barbecue is open to all adult entries irrespective of whether you’ve weighed a fish, but you must be at prizegiving to accept it! Details attached, and we actually chose the 6 burner S/S model with gas bottle as well, so it’s nearly $1200 in value! Contestants that didn’t claim a major prize will all receive spot prizes on Saturday, so make sure you are in attendance.
The Kilwell prizes are all sorted (amazing as usual!), plus the Sweetmans Reel Fishin’ team have put together a superb array of additional prizes from their own stock plus contributions from Holiday Fishing, NZ Fishing News, BNZ Huntly, and Plant Talk.
Tight Lines everyone for the last day, and see you at the prizegiving!
Mike, John, William, Peter, Bob, Sharnay, Steve and Tracey.
